| Notes: | f. polaris was previously regarded as a subspecies of N.urticae |
| (originally described as Vanessa urtica polaris). However, areas | |
| dominated by polaris in cold summers can be taken over by the nominate | |
| urticae in warm Arctic summers. Even within offspring of the same | |
| brood both forms can occur. polaris should therefore be treated as a cold | |
| climate form. | |
| Numerous other forms have been named. | |
| Described forms found in Norway: | f. frig. polaris (Staudinger, 1871) |
| Etymology: | urticae: urtica = nettle. |
| polaris: polos = pole of the earth. |
