Type locality of nominate species: Kryzma River, Syzran District, Samara oblast', Russia.
Subspecies in Norway: S. orion wahlgreni.
Worldwide distribution: NE Spain, SE France, S and SE Europe, costal areas of
S Norway, S Sweden, S Finland, temperate parts of Asia to the
Pacific Ocean, Kazakhstan, NW, NE and C China.

Original decription: in Arkiv för Zoologi Band 38 A 3:1-74
Type locality of subspecies: Ingarö (in the Stockholm skerries), Sweden.
Distribution in Norway: Small areas south of Oslo, on both sides of the Oslofjord. Very rare in
Notes: Norway. Probably on the decline. Possible threats include increased human
human activities in the coastal shore area.
Norwegian orions are quite distinctive from South and Central European specimens.
Scolitantides orion is now protected by law in Norway.

Etymology: wahlgreni: Named after Swedish entomologist Einar Wahlgren.
