COLIAS WERDANDI
| English name: | Pale Arctic Clouded Yellow |
| Norwegian name: | Polargulvinge |
| Auctor: | (Zetterstedt, 1840) |
| Original description: | as Colias nastes werdandi in Insecta Lapponica: 908. |
| Syn.: | - - - |
| Type locality of nominate species: | Torne Lappland, Sweden. |
| Worldwide distribution: | Arctic Fennoscandia only; North Norway, Northwest Sweden and |
| Northwest Finland, ? Novaya Zelmya Island. | |
| Distribution in Norway: | North Norway; Troms fylke and northern Nordland fylke only. |
| Subspecies in Norway: | Only the nominate subspecies is known (although the taxon C. nastes zemblida |
| Grieshuber, 1998 from Novaya Zemlya Island might be a subspecies of C. werdandi). | |
| Notes: | Until recently, Colias werdandi was regarded to be a subspecies of Colias nastes, |
| a species found in North America and Northeast Asia. Some authors, especially | |
| Russians, have placed C. werdandi as a subspecies of C. tyche (Boeber, 1812), | |
| a species which inhabits Siberia and Mongolia. | |
| Recent studies by Jan Haugum, have, however, proved that Colias werdandi is | |
| morphologically distinct from both C.nastes and C.tyche (ref.: Kudrna, 2002). | |
| The little know f. christiernssoni Lampa is a rare yellow-orange form | |
| which has been suggested to be a natural hybrid between C. werdandi | |
| and C. hecla. This author belives it is just a rare form. | |
| Recognized subspecies: | None. |
| Subspecies of C.nastes: | C.n.nastes Boisduval, 1832 - Greenland, Nunavut, N and NW Canada |
| C.n.moina - Churchill | |
| C.n.thula - North Alaska | |
| C.n.mongola Alpheraky, 1897 - Altai and Sayan Mts. | |
| C.n.streckeri Grum-Grshimaïlo, 1895 - N Siberia, Chukot Peninsula | |
| C.n.dezhnevi Korshunov, 1995 - Magadan Province, Chukotka, Kamchatka | |
| C.n.flinti Churkin, Grieshuber, Bogdanov & Zamolodchikov, 2001 - Wrangal Is. (NE Siberia) | |
| C.n.magadanica Churkin. Grieshuber, Bogdanov & Zamolodchikov, 2001 - SE Magadan Province. | |
| C.n.jacutica Kurentzov, 1970 - Eastern Yakutia | |
| C.n.zemblica Verity, 1911 - Novaya Zemlya Is. (subspecies of nastes, werdandi or tyche?) | |
| Etymology: | Werdandi: Verdandi or Verðandi was one of the three norns, guarding Undarbrunnr, the Weird's Well. |
| Verdandi ("Present" or "Necessity"), Urda ("Past" or "Fate") and Skuld ("Future" or "Guilt") weaved the | |
| thread of fate (Yggdrasil, Norse mythology). |
