English name: UK: Swallowtail.  US: Old World Swallowtail.
Norwegian name: Svalestjert
Auctor: Linnaeus, 1758
Original description: as Papilio Eques machaon in Syst.Nat. (Edn. 10) I: 462.
Syn.: sphyrus Hübner, 1823
Type locality of nominate species: Sweden.
Subspecies in Norway: P.m.machaon.
Worldwide distribution: Europe, NW Africa, Middle East, Asia north of 30o, Japan, China, Taiwan, North America.
Etymology: machaon: mache (Gr.) = battle, combat. Machaon was the son of Asclepius, the Greek god of health.

Syn.: lapponica, Verity
Type locality of subspecies: Sweden.
Distribution in Norway: Lowland areas, esp coastal districts of South Norway.
Also North Norway; Nordland, Troms and Finnmark.
Notes: Widespread, but rare in most localities. Locally common,
esp along the coast-line of Telemark and Aust-Agder and
the Sognefjord.
Described forms found in Norway: none
Etymology: lapponica: belonging to Lapland.
