Original description: as Papilio Nymphalis io in Syst.Nat. (Edn. 10) I: 472.

Type locality of nominate species: Sweden.
Subspecies in Norway: N. i. io.
Worldwide distribution: South and Central Europe, temperate parts of Asia to the Russian Pacific
coast.

Type locality of subspecies: Sweden.
Distribution in Norway: South Norway east of the central mountain chain.
Notes: The species was first recorded in Norway as late as 1902 and it was a
very rare species in the beginning of the century. In the 1970's and -80's
it had become one of the most common butterflies in east Norway.
During the 1990's it suddenly disappeared from many localities. During the
last couple of years it seems to be building up strong populations again.
