English name: Scarce Heath.
Norwegian name: Heroringvinge.
Auctor: (Linnaeus, 1761)
Original description: as Papilio Danaus hero in Fauna Svecica 2 : 274.
Syn.: - - -
Type locality of nominate species: Sweden.
Worldwide distribution: Dispersed colonies in Central Europe. NE Europe across temperate
parts of Asia to Mongolia, Ussuri, China, Korea and Japan.
Subspecies in Norway: C.h.hero.

Type locality of subspecies: Sweden.
Distribution in Norway: Small colonies in SE Norway. Possibly extinct from the localities
west of downtown Oslo, in Vestfold and Østfold.
Notes: C. hero is declining in Norway due to the change in its habitats.
Modernization of the agriculture, establishment of camping sites and
golf courses, as well as development of recreational areas are the
main threats to the species. Hansen, L.O. (1993) proved that the
very moderate collecting that takes place does not pose any threat to
C. hero in Norway.
