Norwegian name: Frøyas perlemorvinge.

Original description: as Papilio freija in Dissertatio entomologica sistens insecta Svecica
(Editor: C.P.Thunberg).
Syn.: lapponica (Esper, 1793)
Type locality of nominate species: Västerbotten and Lappland, Sweden.
Worldwide distribution: North Europe to Altai, the Russian Pacific coast, Sakhalinsk, Mongolia,
Japan, Alaska, Canada, Rocky Mountains.
Subspecies in Norway: B.f.freija.
Recognized subspecies: B.f.freija (Becklin, 1791) [=  B.f.zamolodchikovi (Churkin, 2001)] - Fennoscandia, Siberia to Chukotka, 
Amur, Ussuri, Alaska, Canada.
B.f.pallida (Elwes, 1899) [= calais (Fruhstorfer, 1917)] - Altai, Sayan, Mongolia.
B.f.jakutensis (Vnukovsky, 1927) - North-east Yakutia.
B.f.asahidakeana Matsumura, 1926 - Japan; Hokkaido.
B.f.?tarquinius Curtis - Boothia Peninsula, Northwest Territories.
B.f.?natazhati Gibson - Mount Natazhat, Yukon Territory.
B.f.?nabokovi Stallings & Turner - Mile 102, Alaska Highway, British Colombia.

Notes: B.freija is rare in the South Norway, common in North Norway.

Etymology: freija: Freyja was the goddess of fertility, daughter of Njord and sister of Freyj,
in Norse mythology. Freyja (Frøya in modern orthography is an old parallell to
Frigg (see Boloria frigga).
