Original description: as Papilio Plebejus argus in Syst.Nat. (Edn. 10) I: 483.
Syn.: sylvius (Poda, 1761)
aegon ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)
Type locality of nominate species: Sweden.
Subspecies in Norway: S. a. argus.
Worldwide distribution: Europe, temperate parts of Asia to Kazakhstan, Amur, Korea, Amur,
Ussuri and Sakhalin Is.

Etymology: argus: Argos was a hundred-eyed guardian of Io in Greek mythology.
Upon his death, these eyes were placed by Juno on the tail of a peacock.
