AGRIADES AQUILO
| English name: | Arctic Blue |
| Norwegian name: | Polarblåvinge |
| Auctor: | (Boisduval, [1832]) |
| Original description: | as Argus aquilo in Icones Hist. Lep. 1:62. |
| Syn.: | - - - |
| Type locality of nominate species: | "North Cape, Siberia to Altai, and Labrador". |
| Subspecies in Norway: | A. quilo aquilo. |
| Worldwide distribution: | The extreme northern parts of Fennoscandia and Siberia to the Pacific |
| Ocean, western North America from the Bering Strait to Washington state. | |
| Notes: | Boisduval mentioned the type locality to include Labrador. Specimens from |
| this area, however, belong to A. franklinii. The true type locality of | |
| A. aquilo has been selected to be North Cape. Consequently, A. aquilo aquilo | |
| inhabits northern Fennoscandia and the European part of Siberia. Specimens | |
| from Central Siberia to Kamchatka belong to A. aquilo wosnesenskii | |
| (Ménétriés, 1855). The subspecific classification of A. aquilo in North | |
| America needs to be clarified. |
A. aquilo aquilo | |
| Auctor: | (Boisduval, [1832]) |
| Syn.: | - - - |
| Type locality of subspecies: | "North Cape, Siberia to Altai, and Labrador". |
| Distribution in Norway: | North Norway; from Hattfjelldal to the Norwegian-Russian border. |
| Notes: | Some authors place A. aquilo as a subspecies of A. glandon, a |
| species flying in the Alps, Pyrenees and Sierra Nevada. The morphological | |
| differences between A. quilo and A. glandon prove that A. aquilo is a good species. | |
| Described forms found in Norway: | - - - |
| Etymology: | aquilo (Greek) = the northern wind. |
