Original description: as Papilio Nymphalis antiopa in Syst.Nat. (Edn. 10) I: 476.
Syn.: pompadour (Pollich, 1783)

Type locality of nominate species: Sweden.
Subspecies in Norway: N. a. antiopa.
Worldwide distribution: Holarctic; temperate belt of Europe, Asia and America from Alaska
to Venezuela.

Type locality of subspecies: Sweden.
Distribution in Norway: Widespread in south-east Norway. Few pre-1945 records from West Norway.
North Norway: Nordland and Finnmark only.
Notes: A rare species in Norway during the 20th century until late 1980's.
The species had 17 years cycles, gradually building up from being virtually
non-existent to be common, and then returning to being extremely rare.
Since the late 1980's it has been a fairly common species in southeast Norway.
More often seen after hibernation in the spring than in the autumn.
