Norwegian name: Alvesmyger.
Auctor: (Hübner, [1803])
Original description: as Papilio alveus in Samml. europ. Schmett. 1 : 70.

Type locality of nominate species: Mehrstetten, German Alps, 700 m.
Worldwide distribution: Morocco, Algeria, Europe across Siberia to Mongolia, North China and
Russian Far East.
Subspecies in Norway: P.a.scandinavicus.
Worldwide subspecies: P.a.alveus (Hübner, [1803]) - Europe and Siberia.
P.a.numidus Oberthür, 1910 - Morocco and Algeria.
P.a.centralhispaniae Verity, 1925 - Mountains of North Portugal, Spain, South France, Italy.
P.a.scandinavicus Strand, 1903 - Norway and Sweden.
P.a.caucasicus Picard, 1949 - Caucasus
P.a.iliensis Reverdin, 1912 - Dzhungarsky Alatau, Tian-Shan (synonymized to the nominotypical subspecies by Prins & Porten, 1995).
P.a.sifanicus Grum-Grshimaïlo, 1891 - South Siberia mountains, Central Asia.
P.a.schansiensis Reverdin, 1915 - North-east China, southern Amur and Ussuri.
Etymology: alveus = board for a game of dice, chessboard (Greek).

Type locality of subspecies: Dovre, Norway.
Distribution in Norway: South Norway.
Notes: P. alveus is now extinct in almost all lowland populations in Norway.
It is still reasonably widespread in the mountains.

Etymology: scandinavicus = of Scandinavia.
